Class Descriptions

Bardic Habitat Restoration Project
Instructor: Master Cerian Cantwr

The perennially relevant round table discussion about ways to encourage and support the bardic arts in your area.

How To Fit New Words To Old Tunes
Instructor: The Honorable (and Wrong!) Master Dahrien Cordell

Contretemps, filk, parody, and other words all refer to things that might have you writing new words for music that already exists.  Tricks & Tips for discovering the scansion in existing poetry or song, and duplicating it with new words.  Test your work to see if the words really fit the tune you borrowed like the originals; if needed, figure out why they don't, and tweak them.

Cost: Humor and smiles.

I Can Play That Tune in Any Key, and So Can You
Instructor: Signore Tommaso il Vecchio

Elementary harmonic analysis and applied instrumental transposition skills.  Examples will be drawn from liturgical and secular music including folk and plainsong, as well as participant suggestions.  Bring your instrument if you plan to play.  Group singing is likely to occur.

Improv Games
Instructor: Master John Inchingham

Master John Inchingham the Fool introduces newcomers to the wonders of improvisation and provides veteran performers with a chance to test their abilities.  Improvisation is taught both as an art-form in and of itself and as a means of creating ideas for the aspiring bard (and for the seasoned tunesmith with writer’s block).  The class is fun and informal.  Come prepared to move and to make a fool of yourself!

Intro to Harmony for Bardic Circles & Beginning Ear Training
Instructor: Lady Lorelei Skye

Ever been to a bardic and wanted to join in the harmony being sung?  This class is an introductory and practical class on how to start hearing and singing the harmony found in song, the importance of melody balance, and includes a brief discussion of different types of written and impromptu harmoy found in bardic and the SCA.  Some musical and/or bardic circle experience useful, but not required.

Pulling the Teeth Out Of Stage Fright
Instructor: THL Lucia Elena Braganza

The vast majority of us experience SOME level of stage fright or performance anxiety, whether it's in a bardic space, or the CEO's office.  We'll pin down this ugly-muggly monster, dissect some of the elements of anxiety, wrestle our most common buggaboos into the daylight, and practice some spook-busting techniques.

Scottish Ballads
Instructor: Baroness Catriona nicHugh Mclae

These songs tell dramatic stories of war, love and betrayal, magic and trickery or strange events.  We love them and want to sing them.... But do they really fit our time frame? Come learn about Scottish ballads, a significant and intriguing part of the Scottish literary heritage.

Telling Stories to an Audience
Instructor: Master Toki Redbeard

Anyone can tell a story. This class teaches a storytelling technique that focuses on the audience, and deals with methods of bringing your story to life for them. We will address how to get and keep the audience involved, and how to use them to your advantage. Tips and tricks discussed will include dealing with Hecklers. While designed for SCA storytellers, this class has also proved useful for those who engage in a wide variety of presentations.
