We could probably accommodate a couple more classes. Contact the Provost if you would like to teach a class at Bardic Madness XV.

Classes scheduled (unless otherwise indicated, there are no limits on class size, age, etc.) :

Medieval Music Theory: Modes
Instructor: Mistress Amelie d'Anjou

You probably know what a scale is, and have at least heard of major and minor.  But medieval music theory didn’t know anything about major and minor.  They had different names, plus other “keys” that aren’t exactly keys.  We’ll cover all the modes, both church approved and not!  Examples of pieces in each mode included in handout.  Bring a pencil.

Improv Games
Instructor: Master John Inchingham

Master John Inchingham the Fool introduces newcomers to the wonders of improvisation and provides veteran performers with a chance to test their abilities.  Improvisation is taught both as an art-form in and of itself and as a means of creating ideas for the aspiring bard (and for the seasoned tunesmith with writer’s block).  The class is fun and informal.  Come prepared to move and to make a fool of yourself!

Fado: Portuguese Music from Coimbra to SCA
Instructor: Lord Jose Sao Pacian

An overview of the national music of Portugal from 1263 to the modern Middle Ages.  This class traces the history of a folk music to its roots, and shows how a modern Coimbra Song singer uses the history, modes, harmonies, poetic forms and styles to reach the SCA audience.

Coffee with the Muse: Creating a Grassroots Bardic Venue
Instructor: THL Juliane Bechaumpe

Integrating Bardic activities into an event is always a challenge. In this class we will explore ways to create a venue that is welcoming, supportive and visible. And period. What more could a Bard want?

Introduction to Heian-era Japanese Poetry
Instructor: Sugawara no Tokihira

This class is an overview of the poetry from the Heian era of Japan (9th-12th century CE).  Topics to be covered in class are the types of poetry, the historical timeline of poetry including the imperial anthologies and other major sources, and the role poetry played in court life.  No materials cost, extra handouts available.

Sephardic Song: Overview
Instructor: Mistress Eliane Halevy

Description: The Jewish population of Iberia, when they were expelled from Spain in 1492, took their oral song tradition with them on their journeys all over Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, and eventually the New World. Songs range from family and everyday topics, to medieval-style romances, to religious or ceremonial songs. The songs began to be collected in the early 20th century by ethnomusicologists. No, we can't PROVE they are period...but they are beautiful! Come hear/learn/sing some Sephardic music, and find out what makes its tunes so haunting. 15 sets of handouts will be available.

Writing Humorous Songs
Instructor: Master Cerian Cantwr

Discussion of different comedic elements and how they can be used
in song.

Performance Technique
Instructor: Signore Tomasso Franchesci

Participants will perform a short (1-2 minute) piece in any medium,  and get feedback from the other participants.  Sign up at Troll to perform.  Performance order will be chosen by lot, so no need to fear signing up first.   Observers are welcome.
